As you know, we use Enom to register our domain names. In their infinite wisdom, they've decided that they wanted to give 500+ of our customers their own .info domain name, FREE. In fact, they've already registered this for you, based on the information you provided when you registered your .com with HostPC. The current registration expires 9/29/2005. Because of that, I'm assuming that to qualify, your domain had to be registered AT HOSTPC PRIOR TO THAT DATE

Now, I'm not going to comment on if that was a wise business decision or not, but they've done it, and hit us blindsided with the announcement.

There are currently 500 .info domains registered to HostPC clients - I believe that if you registered your .com here, you're in the list. If you're on the list, we'll be happy to make the .info equivelent of your domain name point to your current server. It looks like all the .info's have expiration dates of 9/29/2005.

As you can appreciate, this is going to be a logistical nightmare for us, so we're asking for your patience.

If you registered your domain (.com) with us at HostPC (through enom) - open a helpdesk ticket. Ask to see if Enom created a .info equivelent for your domain, and if so, tell us what server you're on and we'll point it to that server. You can then add it in your control panel.

If you want control of the .info domain to modify, or change nameservers to any other registrar, please in your helpdesk ticket ask for a domain password to be assigned to the .info registration so that you can make changes yourself.

Please, as I said, have patience with our support staff. We've got to process each one individually, as the requests come in. Expect delays when you open your ticket - we'll get to all of them as soon as we can.

Remember - this is ONLY offered if you registered your .COM with us (I still dont know if .net's are included, but I don't think so - I'll post a followup after I confirm that.)

Thanks - and enjoy your free domain names, courtesy of Enom

You probably know that Afilias, the registry for the .info TLD, has been offering a promotion for free .info domain names.

Our intentions are to offer, for free, a .info name that matches registrants' .com name before the .info name becomes unavailable.

Due to the fact that the ICANN budget is changing, the ICANN fee for the names would likely be five times more ($0.25 verses about $0.045 per name) if we had not registered them when we did, and therefore we would not have been able to offer them for free as we are doing.

We recognize that the speed with which we acted has created some confusion, for which we apologize. Here is what is going on:

These domain names are meant to be free to the registrants. Afilias' hope is that registrants will become more familiar with the .info TLD as a result of this promotion. Afilias and eNom hope that these domain names will be offered for free to the corresponding registrants of the .com domain names. Though the names point to eNom's DNS, they are not being resolved. If the registrant accepts the free domain (or if you accept it on the registrant's behalf) by "activating" the domain, then the registrant can change the whois, update the DNS, perform a transfer and otherwise utilize the domain just like any other domain for the remaining registration period. You can activate the domains from the new "promotion" sub-tab in the domain manager portion of the eNom or PDQ websites. If you or the registrant chooses to do nothing, the name will be deleted at the end of the registration period.

We apologize for any confusion this has created and we hope you understand that we are trying to allow the registrants to take advantage of Afilias' program while the names were still free and available.

    Enjoy your free names!

    Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that I see that my .org domain has a registration in .info too. I had registered the .org with another company before I chose HostPC.

The registration is appreciated, but I don't know what I would do with it.

Now if they could just do that with an .aero domain. Too bad those are $100/year.

That's the domain. I didn't realize that there were other registrars doing that too. I had registered it through Namecheap. My settings in there only show the .org domain.

That Sponsoring Registrar of R280-LRMS I found on Registrar Codes came back as Sipence,Inc.

I found some news about this at:
    Article

It appears to be some type of Columbia House-style business model by giving something away and then hope the customers come back in later years to pay.

This Internet stuff is getting confusing. Maybe I should just go back to using the US Mail.
