View Full Version : .htaccess under DA?
Ok, we're running apache so .htaccess use should be the same.
However, DA has it's on method of installing alternate error pages, etc. and seems to hide the existance of .htaccess.
So is it ok for me to install my .htaccess? How can I work with it, change it, etc if FTP doesn't show it, or more importantly, the DA file manager doesn't give me access to it or show its existance?
I had some things to stop hot linking of files, etc.... so I want to reinstall.
Hello NHFTRich
not sure about the file manager question
but most ftp clients won't show but filename.extension files until you ask it too
what client are you using? in ws_ftp on the right side you will see a blank box...you can put *.* in there and click "enter" and you will be able to see the .htaccess file

Hello,
your .htaccess files *are* there, but just hidden. All files that start with a dot are usually considered hidden, so the Filemanager doesn't show them. You can edit them from the filemanger by entering the ususal filename into your location bar, but add "?action=edit" to the end of the string. eg:
domain.com:2222/CMD_FILE_MANAGER/domains/domain.com/public_html/.htaccess?action=edit

I never understood why people have file MANAGERS that cant manage all the files...
But then again, some system files, you dont want people mucking with.
But then again, if they're gonna delete 'em, may as well be all of 'em...
Thanks for these clues!
Sounds like another one to add to your DA FAQ! ;)
OH.. another strange thing. I am using WS_FTP_LE. I put in *.* in the blank box, now I see TWO copies of every file in my directory. :( OH, and no .htaccess!
I'll try the file manager.
Hmmm.. more strangeness, I expected to find a .htaccess in my root directory already: /domains/domain.com/public_html/.htaccess
Because I setup some alternate error files, etc with DA, but it wasn't there.
Does DA have them somewhere else?
I really don't want to start mucking with this if I'm going to screw up what is already there.
If I can't see something that's there, I may step on it.
The domain.com:2222/CMD_FILE_MANAGER/domains/domain.com/public_html/.htaccess?action=edit which I tried brought up what appeared to be a blank file (yes, I used my own domain.com)

i don't think the public_html directory contains a .htaccess file by default. even though DA does custom error pages and such.
hope that helps a bit.

thre isn't a default in mine... The defaults are set in the higher directories, such as directory listing turned off...
Also, in ftp use command ls -al to see all files...
Thanks for all your help, I was able to install my .htaccess without a problem.
Now for another related question. Before installing my .htaccess I used DAs ability to create custom error pages. I can see that it created files such as 401.shtml in my public_html directory.
Now I would like to turn off DAs method for doing alternate error pages and use the ones specified in my .htaccess file.
Is there a proper method to turn off DAs alternate files? I could simply delete them, but I don't want to do this if there a reference to them are left somewhere.
Any ideas on how to delete these 'properly'? I could simply keep them and use DAs instead of my own, but I'd prefer them to be in a subdirectory rather than my webroot.

use -la in the box in ws_ftp
Thanks! -la or -al work great in WS_FTP. "*.*" does not.
