View Full Version : Transition to DirectAdmin

I'd like to give you a status report on our transition to Direct Admin. I guess this will be more of a "here's where we are, here's where we're headed" report.

1. So far, I'm VERY pleased with the way DirectAdmin is managing the servers. Server loads are MUCH MUCH less than we experienced on Ensim. The disk handling routines, apache restarts, etc - all lead to a better experience for the user, and the server administrator.

2. DirectAdmin has been VERY proactive with their issues and upgrades. Since we've used them, there have been 3 significant updates ... all without problems - all performed BY DirectAdmin, flawlessly.

3. IMAP rollout was not without it's own issues, but it is being refined and worked on by DA staff. I'm strongly leaning towards converting the IMAP structure to Courier-IMAP -v- UW. There are a lot more benefits, and higher compatibility ratings with Courier. A couple of people have tried to use HORDE (IMP) Webmail - it doesn't work real well under UW - but should work fine under Courier-IMAP. No ETA yet, but it's something we're looking into

4. Stats (http://www.site-helper.com/stats.html). I know everyone is looking for a more robust stats package like AWstats ... we're working towards that. Again, no ETA, but probably before the end of the year. Webalizer (a very common, good program), is installed in your control panel by default

5. I'd like to address the issue of progress in leaving Rackshack. We are about 90% cleared off www7 - there are a couple people I'm waiting on to finish clearing their sites - www7 will be released to Rackshack in 7 days.

www8. We are going to begin a push to clear www8 by December 1, so it can be released to RS by 12/5.

ensim1&2. We will be working towards clearing those servers asap. I'd like to have those completely cleared by 2/5.

If you have NOT begun moving yet, PLEASE open a helpdesk ticket at http://helpdesk.hostpc.com - ask to be setup on the new servers - you'll appreciate the differences - and the added features of DirectAdmin.

Last subject - our current sale. Our current sale has been somewhat slower than predicted, but thats giving us time to catch up on the issues of moving to DirectAdmin and the new datacenter. These are the final two weeks of the sale - it absolutely ends 11/18, and will NOT be repeated before the end of the year. If you're going to order, now is the time.

Thanks everyone for your continued support...

I would have been transferred by now but it's taken a week to deal with the generic-reseller-name-server issue. I'll do what I can to get it done the next couple of days, but this is getting tight on time.

You're actually the last one on that box I think... maybe one other. Please let me know what we can plan on...

I thought I saw a post somewhere that compares specs for the new servers vs the old servers. I've looked all over the forum but not found it. Can you provide a link to that post or repost it here?

I just sent a notice to my clients about plans for upgrading the server. I'll move the data tonight and ask them to change the DNS tomorrow.

I have a quesiton:

When will DA increase mail box size to 20GB? and is it possible for
users to control the size in the near future?

Thanks.

20 GIG?! Holy cow, i thought I was a packrat! It is "user controled" in that you can only have as much email as you have paid for space... Email box is a part of your quota... (smtp) But i dont see a method to restrict the size of a mail box... Unless you can create users with limited disk quota under your admin account...

The webmail limit though is a whole different animal...

My fault, i just noticed that you can put a quota on on virtual email addresses...

Go to the control panel and create pop account... you will see that the mail accounts can now be limited and quota'd

this was added on OCt 30 1.196

sorry, I meant 20MB.

When I checked my pop accounts, it shows 3.56 / unlimited.
When I checked my email, it shows:
Quota limit: Used 3719Kb of 10240Kb available.

So is my mail box size is 10MB or unlimited?
Thanks.

I sent some attachments to my email account to test the 10MB limit.
When they exceed 10MB, they still go to my webmail box; but, I can't
check any email at this point.

So a quota bigger than 10MB might be meaningless because you can't
check any email when actual content exceeds 10MB.

I've been contacting admin for a long time. They said they would
increase size to 20MB in a week. I've not seen this change even today.

guys, is your mail box size 10MB or 20MB or bigger?

thanks.

I am assuming that you guys are talking webmail box, and not your smtp drop box for mail. Your email will still be delivered to your smtp box, but as of the current, uebiemail (sp) has a set limit of the max size of the email IT will download.

As i understand it, uebeiemail is a pop client which will pop email off your smtp box and store it in its own place (as you can still receive it through your own outlook or whatever pop'er you use) This pop'ed email space is limited and can be changed by Father Root.

To change the webmail quota edit (as root):

/var/www/html/webmail/inc/config.php

That is what everyone else said when it went from 10-20mb and now from 20-30mb. :P . Now, I am just waiting for the next person to ask why we have a limit at 30MB and then joe will have to go through the same rigmarole again. I find this subject kind of amusing... lol :D :D
