We've had a number of issues with Installatron here at HostPC. These include late upgrades of software to fix critical security issues, to scripts being available on one server and not another, etc. It seems that it's not being updated as often as they were in the beginning, and it's starting to cause some issues.

I've written to them a number of times concerning these issues, but have not heard back from them as of yet.

I've decided to let our licenses lapse with Installatron which means they will be removed from the servers throughout the course of the summer. Our first renewals with them come up in July and continue on to December 05 - March 06. As each server is due to expire, it will disappear from your control panels.

Here's a rough breakdown of the license expirations:

1 10-Jul-05 www20.hostpc.com
2 10-Jul-05 www17.hostpc.com
3 10-Jul-05 www18.hostpc.com
4 10-Jul-05 www19.hostpc.com
5 10-Jul-05 www13.hostpc.com

7 10-Jul-05 www11.privatelabeldns.com
8 10-Jul-05 www15.hostpc.com
9 10-Jul-05 www16.privatelabeldns.com
10 19-Aug-05 www21.hostpc.com
11 16-Sep-05 www23.hostpc.com
12 18-Sep-05 www22.privatelabeldns.com
13 21-Mar-06 www5.privatelabeldns.com
14 03-Nov-05 www24.hostpc.com
15 06-Dec-05 www25.hostpc.com
16 18-Jan-06 www30.hostpc.com
17 20-Feb-06 www26.hostpc.com
18 19-Mar-06 www27.hostpc.com
19 31-Mar-06 www28.hostpc.com
20 13-Apr-06 www29.hostpc.com
21 15-Apr-06 www31.hostpc.com
22 24-Apr-06 www32.hostpc.com

I'm hoping to find a replacement for Installatron, unfortunately we've given these folks a year and the problems just continue to mount.

Thanks

Joe

Wow that seems pretty drastic. . . Is there no other alternative than discontinuing Installatron completely?

Thanks,
Glenn

Would you rather have security issues on the servers that the scripts present? Other options include manaually installing these scripts and maintaining them.

Maybe this is just me, but I personally found it easier to install/upgrade the programs myself, rather than rely on Installatron. It seemed like whenever I tried to use installatron, there was some issue (usually minor). I was also never able to have installatron correctly update anything that I did install with it. Maybe it is also related to the fact that I always did some customizations to the programs that I was installing. ;)

For these reasons, I preferred installing things on my own. Also, it seems to me like you have a little more control over what it is doing. Most of the programs, at least the ones that I have installed, have excellent instructions, which are easy to follow. Then when you need to do an update (upgrading to new version for instance) you better understand what is changing and how it will effect any modifications that you may have done.

3 10-Jul-05 www18.hostpc.com

6 10-Jul-05 www14.privatelabeldns.com

Those are all set to expire in the next 14 days. If you wish to continue using installatron, open a helpdesk ticket and request to move to a server that doesn't expire soon.

This discontinuance won't impede the scripts you've already installed, it'll just be removed from your menu and you wont be able to add new, or update the scripts you already have (automatically) ... it all can still be done manually.

I knew that would make Dan happy. ;)

I agree that manual installation is so easy, why not do it yourself? Does Installatron really serve any useful purpose? And if you have to pay license fees, by all means discontinue -- spend your savings on a Big Dream Vacation.

License fees are negligaable... the support headache that accompanies every update is what's killing us. In the beginning it was fairly stable, but it's gotten progressively more difficult to support with each "upgrade"

May I make the suggestion of posting links to the scripts homepages somewhere as an alternative? I know it's simple but it would be almost as useful. :D
