View Full Version : Anyone Else Getting Some Strange New Spam?

Recently (withing the past week) I sent an email to all of the email users of my domain. There are only about 5 or 6 of them. One of my users responded back, I wrote him back, etc. This is nothing new or different; I send and receive tons of email correspondence daily from my friends. Anyway, ever since we wrote each other, we've been getting email spam selling mortage rates and stuff. What's strange is that the emails are sent to me, and CC'd to him. Every single one is the same. Now, I've taken steps to block mails from the domain(s) that they are from and also block emails with the word(s) that are in those emails, too. But I just got another one that is obviously from the same thing but just with different words and domains. I'm very careful with this address as far as not signing up with it and not giving it out except for strict personal use. Plus, I've never seen something like this where it goes to my name and CC's my friends name on each email. Could he have a virus or something. Bah, stupid spam!!!
Yes - most likely your computer, or his, is infected with a virus, Spyware or Adware that is monitoring your email usage... it's too coincidental. I'd scan both immediately.
Now that this email address of yours has been compromised, it might be time to delete it and create a fresh one.

dammit. I'm sure mine is clean - I sent it originally from work and everything here is clean both by adaware and the new MS antispyware. I'll forward some advice on to my friend. Maybe its just a resident thing and if we get it cleaned off the emails will stop. Heh would that be too much to ask??
If you need help cleaning it up, let me know -- virus/spyware removal are kinda of becoming a side-specialty of mine. There are many tools that are much better for this kind of thing than adaware and ms antispyware (though both are part of a total solution)
And if I can't get it fixed, I've got contacts that I tag-team support with on a couple of websites. Among us, we'll get it figured out for you.

Thanks, but I think we've got it. I emailed my friend and he said he was working on his work pc, too, to send the emails. As far as cleaning things, I've had pretty good luck with a combo of spybot/adaware/ms antispy plus hijack this for misc things. I'm sure my system is clean, and we have an enterprise antivirus program that gets everything. I dunno...maybe its all just some quirky thing or something :-/
