View Full Version : Question Concerning Uebimiau - /webmail
There's some serious vulnerabilities with Uebimiau right now, and I'm VERY tempted to just remove it from the servers as no updates have been announced by uebiMiau to fix this 2 yr old "glitch".
I know some of you use /webmail - but I also know most of you use /squirrelmail instead.
I'm trying to get a feel for how many people are really using /webmail
thanks
My wife uses /webmail; I don't use either.
Joe,
We use both pop3 and /webmail.
In my work, I travel quite a bit. Therefore, we choose to leave the mail on the server with our pop client so we can both see the mail.
When we check the mail with squirrelmail, it marks everything as unread, which causes it to be re-downloaded to the pop client -- and it does that with either outlook/oe or thunderbird. /webmail doesn't do that.
Unless that "bug" has been fixed in Squirrelmail, I'm not interested in using it... it's a major PITA...

Joe,
I use squirrelmail and was wondering if you plan on implementing secure SSL connections to it? If so, how soon?
With many of us using public wifi to access email, this is a must.
Here's a recent article on the topic:

I read the article, sadly it is not as easy as that. Mr. Rash for all his security experience may just be a little uninformed about the real security of SSL.

I don't use either for my own domain but I'm getting ready to unleash a group of salesmen on a site I just set up for them. I had planned to only tell them about webmail because the owner of the company doesn't want them changing their email passwords themselves. We discussed before that we couldn't take off the password change stuff from squirrelmail, thus the need for webmail.
You can always install your own version of squirrelmail - that has, for instance, a company logo...
Just a thought

Joe, I orginally purchased a unique IP and SSL with my account. I tried browsing using the secure protocol https://mydomain.com/squirrelmail, and it is 128-bit encrypted, both using firefox and IE. So it seems this appears to be what I wanted all along.
When I have to use webmail I use squirrel mail. I have looked at the other GUI but found that they had a slight learning curve and I am always in a hurry.

I have a webmail address but it holds nothing but junk. No biggie for me.

i like webmail's interface better.
however, squirrelmail allows my email users to change their own passwords without me (the administrator) knowing them. i like that feature. i like to be able to tell them that i cannot get into their email if they change their password.
am i missing something?

Any insight into this question/problem? I've mentioned it several times in the forums over the couple of years I've been hosted with you guys... If this SM bug can be fixed, then we'd be ok with SM. If this bug isn't fixed, then we want nothing to do with SM...

The less-than-satisfying answer is that it may have been fixed inadvertently. I can tell you that we have had no new reports of this issue lately, AFAIK. None of the 3 of us use Outlook or Thunderbird regularly, so we don't have first-hand knowledge for you. Many email components have been updated on all servers in the last few weeks, including exim and squirrelmail. so it is possible that a fix for this issue was implemented in the course of one of those upgrades.
Maybe you could set up a test account to check this with and report back?
It's still doing it on some emails -- it used to do it on all emails. I tested an account in each of my three domains and all three do the same thing. It's an occasional mail that SM's marking as undownloaded and causes Thunderbird/Outlook to redownload. I can't see any consistency among the mails that it redownloads - some have attachments, some don't. Some are marked ***SPAM***, some aren't. Some are new messages today, some have been on there awhile. No clue as to why some are "special" and some aren't...
Anyhow, the moral of the story -- it's still doing it. And as long as it's doing that, I'm not interested in using SM - period...

I use squirrelmail if I use a browser, but prefer pop access.
And I too would prefer users DID change their passwords so that they can be assured that NO ONE is snooping on them.

My complaint with Squirrelmail was that DON'T DELETE THIS MESSAGE that appears now and again. It just annoys me so I use Webmail instead.
