i'm getting alarmed at some of the weird spam i'm getting to my hostpc e-mail. i suspect one of the recipients of an e-mail i sent recently has some kind of virus. now i'm getting e-mails with the subject "re[x]" where x is a number, like "re[5]". anyway, i know that there are plans for some kind of spam filtering through hostpc in the future, but i'm wondering if anyone can recommend something i can do NOW to stop this spam at the server level (i don't want my e-mail client to download spam).
i guess i could sign up with a challenge-response system service. any recommendations or other suggestions?
I moved this thread into this forum because it was more relevant to the discussion here.
Some HostPC clients have reported success with SpamAssassin. There are threads in this forum which discuss it and some other solutions.
Don't you have to have root access to install SA??
I'm like zhuxin and want spam removed at the server. There's no reason for it to ever hit my client.
(BTW: Thunderbird's filters ARE catching and eliminating those nuisance re[x] spams. And, I'm like you... I suspect many of those are generated by virus-laden zombie computers. Not something we need to be sharing. But there are others around here who disagree for some reason.)

i looked through some of the old postings. spamassassin was installed on hostpc's servers at one point but they received some complaints and it was removed. apparently you can either turn it on or off for the entire server, you can't control it by domain. there are some other server-level tools that the hostpc people are looking into, but i haven't heard any recent developments.
any other thoughts? maybe a third-party e-mail service?
